{what makes a good photograph}

It catches your eye. You stare, examine, ponder. What is it about this photo that attracts you?

Photography, like any art, is extremely subjective. There really is no 'right' or 'wrong' and some may even say no 'good' or 'bad'. I tend to disagree with the latter. I feel like there is a certain something that makes any one photograph pleasing or unappealing to individuals. The elements of what makes a photo go far beyond what is captured within the frame. There are feelings, emotions, things said or done, events around an object or portrait, even songs or noises that each person may associate with a photo. This though, is what makes art personal.

The quality and use of contrast, framing, lighting, ISO, aperture, color, subject, focus and all the other elements of a photo are all up to one's interpretation of it. I usually prefer a slightly overexposed photo, natural lighting, subjects that have interesting textures or looks...weird subjects, different subjects. The settings of the camera to capture an image that I prefer, are up to me when I'm shooting. Others may lean toward something else. I like off-balanced images a lot of times, something that makes the image interesting, intriguing. Sometimes a shitty image is nice to me, because I remember who I was with, what I was doing, the things I heard and smelt, the way I felt about it all...it becomes personal to me and I become attached. Most may say that 'blurry' images aren't ideal in the definition of what makes a 'good' photograph. But I completely disagree. Sometimes even with the blur of the image, the colors of the light, the movement of the subject, or even the uncertainty of what it even is...is exactly what that specific photo needed to look better than it would have in focus.

A lot of times I find myself editing through photos of my own {or others'}, clicking through them saying to myself, "shitty, shitty, shitty...next...shitty, shitty." But in doing this, I am usually unable to even pinpoint exactly what it is that makes me not like the photo. I can go through them quickly and sift through the ones that I think are 'good'. There are so many elements to one frozen moment that makes one person's opinion of it, differ from the next. I think the main thing to remember in critiquing photography {or any other art} is that every piece is creative, each one is unique, and each one has it's own story. Maybe then, the beauty in seeing, will surpass the overlooking and criticizing.
